Message from Executive Director

A woman with long, wavy hair smiles, posing outdoors.

It is with great pride and deep gratitude that I present the Northwest Regional Education Cooperative #2 (NWREC2) Strategic Plan for 2025–2028. As we embark on this new chapter, I reflect on my 28-year journey in education, six of which have been spent serving NWREC2. It is a profound honor to lead this extraordinary organization and to work alongside a dedicated team of professionals and partner districts committed to elevating educational equity and excellence across Northwest New Mexico.

NWREC2’s legacy is rooted in innovation, responsiveness, and collaborative service. Our cooperative has never been defined by size, but by the scope and significance of our impact. Our motto, Small in Number, Mighty in Impact...Riding for the Brand, is not just a phrase; it is our operating principle. It speaks to our unwavering commitment to provide targeted, high-quality support that is both culturally sustainable and outcomes driven.

Over the last several years, we have grown our technical assistance and services to align with district-identified priorities, including inclusionary practices, legal compliance, trauma-informed practices, multi-layered systems of support, and professional learning communities. We’ve expanded our partnerships with local, state, and national agencies; deepened our work in instructional leadership and data-informed decision-making; and strengthened supports for students with IEPs, always centering equity in all we do.

This Strategic Plan represents a shared vision and an actionable blueprint. Through four clear goals–strengthening professional development, governance/accountability, growth/expansion, and advocacy/collaborative partnership, we will continue to provide essential support to the Chama Valley Independent Schools, Cuba Independent Schools, Dulce Independent Schools, Jemez Mountain Public Schools, Mesa Vista Consolidated Schools, Peñasco Independent Schools, Questa Independent Schools, and Taos Municipal Schools. At the heart of this plan is a belief that, together, we can transform systems, inspire educators, and uplift every student we serve.

I am inspired by our progress and motivated by what lies ahead. As Nelson Mandela so eloquently stated, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Guided by this truth and fueled by our collective commitment, we look forward to continuing to ride for the brand, delivering meaningful, measurable, and lasting impact.

Warm regards,

Valerie Trujillo, Executive Director
